What truck size is best for my move?

Updated: May 29, 2021

As you prepare to choose a moving truck for your belongings, start by asking yourself the following questions.

What is the size of your existing residence?

What is the size of your new residence?

How many goods will you be transporting?

How much space do your belongings occupy in terms of volume?

What's the distance between you and your destination?

The majority of moving firms rate their trucks according to cubic feet and/or the number of rooms in your new house. While this is a decent rule of thumb, we recommend opting for a larger truck unless you know precisely how much space your belongings would take up in one. Be honest, most of us aren't spatial magicians capable of quickly calculating cubic volume.

So, how big should your moving truck be? While each circumstance is unique (and you do not have to fulfil all of the requirements to hire a truck), we do have some basic tips.

Truck, Small:

Apartment with one bedroom

1 – 700 sq. ft. of available space

1–3,000 pounds of belongings and/or 400–450 cubic feet

There should be no more than 5 pieces of furniture in the room.

50 boxes or fewer

Truck, Medium:

House with two bedrooms

700–1,200 square feet of area, 3,000–4,500 pounds of weight, and/or 650–850 cubic feet of belongings

There should be no more than ten pieces of furniture in the room.

There should be no more than 100 moving boxes.

Truck, Large:

House with three bedrooms

4500–6500 pounds and/or 900-1400 cubic feet of belongings in a 1,200–1,600 sq. ft. space

There should be no more than 15 pieces of furniture in the room.

There should be no more than 150 moving boxes.

As mentioned, if your belongings surpass our recommended truck size limits, you should definitely use a professional moving company, as you may not be able to safely and legally drive the largest size truck.
