10 Things you SHOULD declutter when you move! Part 1
Updated: Aug 25
Read on for a comprehensive breakdown of categories and factors to consider when selecting what to leave behind, whether you're making a serious attempt to reduce or simply want to strategize. You'll lessen your load while also ensuring the prosperity of your future house.
Foods that have expired or are no longer wanted
Warning: there's a high possibility that a lot (or at least some) of the food you've been storing has gone bad, so now is an excellent opportunity to clean out your fridge, freezer, and pantry. Make the most of what's still edible before you go (it'll be like your own season of Top Chef), and avoid wasting anything by donating it to a food bank.
You Don't Use Cookware and Appliances
Take inventory of your tableware, pots and pans, and other cooking utensils while you're in the kitchen. Consider giving or selling any new or gently-used but still-operational excess, as well as items that are no longer of personal or functional use (such as mismatched food containers or broken appliances).
Personal Care and Old Cleaning Products
The things we use to keep ourselves and our houses in good shape tend to accumulate over time. Remove any formulae that have exceeded their expiration dates, as well as outdated toothbrushes, loofahs, and other sponges that might harbour bacteria.
Get honest about what's truly serving you on a day-to-day basis out of what's left. You had to buy every colour of lipstick but only wore one? What about that cheap window spray that never stops streaking? If you haven't used it in a while or it's been put in the back of your cupboard, get rid of it. (Some cosmetics companies will recycle or compensate you for your old containers.)
Bath Towels and Mats that Have Been Used
Having a few extra towels on hand might come in handy (think laundry day, pool season, and unexpected visitors), but if they're frayed, ripped, or no longer absorbent, it's time to part ways. The same may be said about worn-out bath mats that can't be revived with a decent washing or that won't fit in your new bathroom.
Pillows and an old mattress
The importance of a good night sleep should never be underestimated. Consider an update for your new home if your mattress has outlived its usefulness (the average is seven to ten years) or no longer delivers the support you require.
Comforters and pillows, which may accumulate dirt, dust mites, and mildew, should be replaced more regularly (anything from six months to two years, according to allergy specialists), especially if they can't be washed properly in between.
