HOW do we pack our clothes for the move ?

Updated: Mar 30

Before you pack your clothes, there are a few things you should do.

Examine your closet — Before you start packing your belongings for a move, have a look through your closet. Examine your attire, shoes, caps, purses, and other accessories carefully. Which objects are worth packing and which are no longer needed or wanted? To get a complete picture of your wardrobe, hang all of your items on hangers in front of you. Remove folded clothing from drawers and arrange it on your bed. This will provide you a clearer image of your actual possessions.

Decide what to retain, what to give, and what to sell - The dilemma is whether to keep or not to keep. After giving your wardrobe a thorough inspection, split everything into three piles: keep, donate, and sell. We recommend asking yourself three questions to help you decide what to retain and what to toss: Have you worn this item in the previous year? Is this thing still fashionable? Is the item a good fit for you? Is it in excellent working order? If the answers to these questions are a resounding no, toss the piece into the donate or sale pile.

Donate nicely worn clothing from your closet – It's now time to start cleaning out your closet. Start by donating all of your gently worn clothing, shoes, and accessories to your local Goodwill or Salvation Army. Do you have a big stack that won't fit in your car? Many of these organizations also provide free pick-up services. When giving household items, make sure you get a tax-deductible donation receipt from the organization.

Items from your closet that are still stylish or new can be sold – Do you want to make a little more cash on your clothes? Try selling them on the internet, at a yard sale, or at a consignment shop. Facebook, Kijiji, Mom Groups, eBay, and Local Lists are some of the online marketplaces for used closet goods. Another fantastic approach to sell your unwanted home goods and apparel is to host a yard sale. When organizing a yard sale in your area, use this checklist as a guide. A third option for selling your worn clothing is to go to a local consignment store. From pricing the item to selling it, consignment shops handle it all. But keep in mind that they get a cut of the earnings as well.

Keep nostalgic stuff in your closet – Not ready to let go of some precious garments? Consider putting them in a self-storage facility. Some items in your wardrobe are too valuable to discard or sell, from your wedding gown to those odd antique finds. You'd want to maintain them in your possession even if you don't wear them on a regular basis. Try com's Storage Center to compare estimates from storage facilities near your new home for help selecting a safe, secure, and climate-controlled storage space.

Other moving supplies that may come in handy when packing and moving clothing items include: garment bags, packing paper, hat boxes, plastic bins, shoe boxes and plastic baggies.

In addition to using the right supplies, here are 5 more packing methods and tips for prepping for the move.

  1. Keep clothing on hangers

  2. Keep folded clothes in dresser drawers
